Requiem-Recomposed

Conductor | Johannes Fritzsch
Composer | Gordon Hamilton

9 July 2022
Federation Concert Hall, Hobart

As part of Hobart Festival of Voices, Mozart’s iconic Requiem is revisited by contemporary composer Gordon Hamilton. Shrouded in mystery surrounding its composer and incompleteness. Hamilton has reworked the music to fill in many gaps within the original mass, and while nodding respectfully to Mozart’s style, has reinvented the soundscape to include boundary-pushing harmonies and an inventive and kaleidoscopic orchestration. The vibrancy of the piece reinforces the drama of the original Requiem while transforming it into a cutting edge 21st Century work.

‘The Happiness Box’ is the inspiring story of three friends – a lizard, a monkey and a frog – who find a magical box and embark on a journey through the jungle to discover the secret of happiness. The story was written in secret in 1942 by two Australian Prisoners of War (David Griffin and Leslie Greener) to lift the spirits of the child prisoners in Changi Jail. Australian composer Bryony Marks has captured the story in a musical celebration of humour, courage and friendship.

"...a harrowing piece exploring the realities and romanticisms of Lachlan Macquarie... Truthfully, I’m just not sure anything could follow ‘Macquarie’ and garner the same attention and awe as its predecessor... never doubt an orchestra’s ability to kick ass." – Kyley Thompson for Scenestr.com [read in full]

One of the QSO’s secret weapons is Gordon Hamilton, a musical chameleon with bonafides in the territories of Hip Hop and Classical music. His arrangements were authentic, used imaginative colour and crucially, celebrated rather than patronised the orchestral force." – Gillian Wills for ArtsHub [read in full]

“It is simultaneously quite serious, quite moving and absolutely hilarious”
– James Morrison

Prime Ministerial speeches set to music: Topology and The Australian Voices bring iconic speeches and exceptional musicianship together to celebrate pivotal moments in Australian history. Composed by Robert Davidson, John Babbage and Gordon Hamilton, The Singing Politician takes the words right out of our Prime Ministers’ mouths – from Robert Menzies to Gough Whitlam, Malcolm Fraser to Paul Keating, Bob Hawke to Tony Abbott – and marries them seamlessly to an overlay of stirring music and choral work.

PREMIERE of 'AGE OF THE UNIVERSE'

Saturday 10 June, 7:30pm
Sydney University Great Hall

Sydney University Symphony Orchestra
Conductor | Luke Spicer

A melody is heard. As it repeats, it halves in tempo and new layers are brought in, each time halving the tempo. Eventually, the initial melody moves so slowly that it would take longer than the current age of the universe to play just once: an other-worldly and spacey piece.
